Youth Open Studios
Nested within the citywide SF Open Studios event, artists under age 18 are mentored by ArtSpan Member Artists to prepare to show their work to the public. Since launching in 2014, Youth Open Studios has served over 400 youth artists and has grown to provide participating youth arts groups year round access to workshops with Artist Mentors, exhibition opportunities throughout the city, and field trips to art galleries and artist studios. Highlights from 2017 include gallery tours at the Asian Art Museum, printmaking activities at 3 Fish Studios, and a youth exhibition at the SF Women Artists Gallery.
Youth Open Studios employs ArtSpan Artist Mentors to provide guidance and share their experience as professional artists with youth who want to make a more serious commitment to their creative expression. Artist Mentor Sonia Leticia recounts from her workshops, "Each time I meet with a group of kids and see their eyes light up when I show them the artwork that I have made, and I explain that they can do it too... it is very uplifting. It is so inspiring to hear their chatter and questions turn to focused silence once they start putting their young minds and hands to work." You can support youth arts groups by being among their first art buyers at Youth Open Studios.
